Major Honours will match the lettering as closely as possible to your existing signwriting.
Your honours board lettering will either be matched to an existing font, or a custom font created using industry standard technology. The aim is to get as close as possible to the style of your existing signwriting when precision cutting the vinyl. Major Honours will create a custom ‘font’ of your lettering if necessary based on samples of the lettering you already have.
99% of the work that Major Honours undertakes uses vinyl, as opposed to traditional signwriting materials. Some light ‘touch-up’ work to your existing boards can be done.
Using the latest ‘industry standard’ cutting machines and the best quality vinyl, then hand applied to your honours boards.
Cost savings of around 20-40% compared to traditional signwriting.
The art of the traditional signwriter is a highly skilled craft, and a master signwriter can never be beaten in regards to quality. No vinyl service can beat the work of a highly skilled artisan.
The method used for modern vinyl lettering still requires skill and technical knowhow, and the results are fantastic.

The basic process …
Updating an honours board originally created by a signwriter using paint to a modern technique involving vinyl cut lettering requires a careful and meticulous process to maintain the original style and ensure a seamless transition. Here’s an explanation of the steps involved:
- Evaluation of Existing Fonts and Lettering: Before beginning the vinyl cut lettering process, a thorough evaluation of the existing fonts and lettering on the honours board is necessary. This involves closely examining the size, style, spacing, and other design elements used by the signwriter during the initial creation. Understanding these details is essential for replicating the design as accurately as possible.
- Replicating the Signwriter’s Unique Style: Preserving the original signwriter’s unique style is a key objective in this update. The modern technique of vinyl cut lettering allows for precise replication, but it requires skill and expertise. The signwriter’s style might include specific brush strokes, curves, or other nuances that contribute to the overall aesthetic. It’s important to capture these subtleties in the vinyl cut lettering.
- Vinyl Lettering Application: The service offered for updating the honours board will be limited to applying vinyl lettering only and light sanding and surface preparation etc., but without any carpentry or woodwork as such – this can be arranged. The actual process involves cutting the desired lettering from vinyl material using a specialized cutting machine. Once the letters are cut, they are carefully positioned and adhered to the honours board surface.
- Custom Font Creation: In some cases, the existing fonts available in design software like Times New Roman or standard serif fonts might not be sufficient to match the lettering on the honours board. To ensure an exact match, a custom font may need to be created. This involves digitizing and vectorizing the original lettering from the honours board to create a unique digital font that can be used for the vinyl cut lettering process. Major Honours will create a brand-new custom font based on the existing lettering style, which you can check for approval.
- Precision and Attention to Detail: The success of replicating the signwriter’s style depends on precision and attention to detail. Measurements, spacing, and alignment must be accurate to maintain the visual integrity of the honours board. Modern design software and cutting machines can assist in achieving this level of precision, which will be used.
- Durability and Longevity: Vinyl cut lettering offers durability and longevity, making it an ideal choice for updating the honours board. The vinyl material is resistant to fading, peeling, and other environmental factors, ensuring that the updated honours board remains visually appealing for years to come.

The cost
Some honours boards are for ‘Officers’ e.g. Chairperson or Captain etc, and others for competitions. So prices will vary.
The cost of updating the honours boards for competitions is determined by several factors, primarily the number of competitions that will be represented on the boards and the specific format of each competition (e.g., singles, pairs, triples, etc.). The amount of lettering required for each competition directly influences the overall price.
To elaborate, a board dedicated to a single competition with fewer names will naturally require less lettering and, therefore, incur a lower cost for updating. Conversely, a board representing a competition with four names will involve a greater amount of lettering, resulting in a higher cost for updating.
For example, a singles competition may only require 10 -12 inches by 1 inch to allow the date & the winner’s name. Other competitions will require longer lines.
On average (plus spacing/padding around the lettering and the lines above and below):
Singles: 10 -12 inches by 1 inch + padding, per competition each season
Pairs/Doubles: 12 – 18 inches by 1 inch + padding, per competition each season
Triples: 18 to 30 inches + padding, per competition each season
Fours: 24 to 36 inches + padding, per competition each season
Example
If a sports club had 4 types of singles each year, 3 types of pairs, 2 types of triples and 3 fours it would cost in total around £250.
If previous years need updating, then a discount on those years is possible. Some clubs need to catch up on several years of updates.
The Llantwit Major Surf Lifesaving Club boards required 18 years of updates.
A minimum charge of £25 applies to all job to cover travel, equipment and expenses.
