COVERING THE VALE OF GLAMORGAN

Matching the Style

Updating an honours board from hand-painted lettering (if required) to modern vinyl is a precise task. My goal is to make the transition look seamless so that any new names match the old ones perfectly.

Here is how I handle the process:

1. Replicating or Creating the Style

I have a great deal of admiration for the work of traditional signwriters. While I do not offer hand-painted signwriting myself, my modern technique is designed to respect and replicate that classic look.

  • Updating existing boards: I study the original names; if they were hand-painted, I digitise the lettering to create a custom font that captures those unique brush strokes. If the style is an existing digital font, I will identify and match it.

  • New boards: I also produce honours boards from scratch. In these cases, I am not restricted by previous work and can create a fresh design tailored to your needs.

  • Approval: I will always send you a digital proof for your approval before I begin.

2. Precision and Application

Using specialised software and cutting machines, I recreate the exact size and spacing required. This allows for a high level of accuracy that maintains the visual integrity of the board. I then carefully position and adhere these vinyl letters to the surface.

3. Surface Prep and Durability

  • My Role: My service focuses on the layout, creation, and application of vinyl lettering.

  • Carpentry and Sanding: I do not normally perform sanding or woodwork, though I can help you arrange this if the board requires it.

  • The Result: I use high-quality vinyl that is resistant to fading and peeling, ensuring the honours board remains in great condition for years to come.

The cost

Some honours boards are for 'Officers' e.g. Chairperson or Captain etc, and others for competitions. So prices will vary.

The cost of updating the honours boards for competitions is determined by several factors, primarily the number of competitions that will be represented on the boards and the specific format of each competition (e.g., singles, pairs, triples, etc.). The amount of lettering required for each competition directly influences the overall price.

To elaborate, a board dedicated to a single competition with fewer names will naturally require less lettering and, therefore, incur a lower cost for updating. Conversely, a board representing a competition with four names will involve a greater amount of lettering, resulting in a higher cost for updating.

For example, a singles competition may only require 10 -12 inches by 1 inch to allow the date & the winner's name. Other competitions will require longer lines.

On average (plus spacing/padding around the lettering and the lines above and below):

Approx. Pricing per Entry

  • Dates: Adding a year costs approx £5.

  • Singles: Adding one winner’s name (or just a person's name e.g. a chairperson) costs approx £9.

  • Pairs: Adding two names for a doubles competition costs approx £18.

  • Triples: Adding three names costs approx £27.

  • Fours: Adding a team of four names costs approx £36.

Example

If a sports club had 4 types of singles each year, 3 types of pairs, 2 types of triples and 3 fours it would cost in total around £250.

If previous years need updating, then a discount on those years is possible. Some clubs need to catch up on several years of updates.

The Llantwit Major Surf Lifesaving Club boards required 18 years of updates.

A minimum charge of £25 applies to all job to cover travel, equipment and expenses.
